Five Takeaways from UNGA, Loretta Lynn's Legacy, and Cleft Palates

October 7, 2022

Editors' Note

Every year, the meetings around the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in September are center stage for high-stakes diplomacy. Now, with the curtain drawn on this year's meetings, Kate Dodson, vice president for global health at the UN Foundation, shares her top five health takeaways from UNGA 77.

To coincide with today's meeting of the governing board of the new World Bank-hosted Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, our next authors question whether the FIF is ready to lead the response to climate change and future pandemic threats.

Children with cleft palate and cleft lip are twice as likely to be malnourished as other children, according to a new global analysis. Our third article examines how almost half of malnutrition-related deaths linked to clefts could be prevented.

Loretta Lynn died this week at age ninety. Many of her songs powerfully addressed the then-taboo topics of birth control, virginity, and divorce in rural America, where reproductive rights are now again in question. In Lynn's honor, we showcase country music songs that highlight women's reproductive rights and concerns.

As always, thank you for reading, and be well. —Thomas J. Bollyky and Mary Brophy Marcus, Editors
