Cheaper Drugs for Americans and the Pandemic Treaty Hits Pause

May 31, 2024

Editors' Note

U.S. drug prices have been historically more expensive than those in comparable nations. TGH Data Editor Allison Krugman looks into how the Inflation Reduction Act, passed by the Joe Biden administration in 2022, is making prescription drugs more affordable for older Americans—and younger ones, too.

Turning to Cameroon, journalist Abdullahi Jimoh chronicles the National Movement of Adolescent Girls and Young Women's crusade to expand access to menstrual health-care products and education amid a civil war.

Journalist Puja Changoiwala pivots the edition to how COVID-19 lockdowns in India led to an increase in childhood obesity and associated conditions, including asthma and type 2 diabetes.

To wrap up, we dive into the Pandemic Accord negotiations, which despite years of discussion, failed to produce a draft agreement ahead of the seventy-seventh World Health Assembly. CFR's Chloe Searchinger outlines the roadblocks that caused the conversations to stall.

Until next week!—Nsikan Akpan, Managing Editor, and Caroline Kantis, Associate Editor
